Dental Crowns

Natural teeth weaken as they age and become more susceptible to decay, cracks and discoloration. During a routine check-up, your dentist may notice that one of your teeth is infected or cracked. If so, he is likely to recommend that a crown be placed on the tooth to strengthen it.

Crowns are used by dentists to strengthen a tooth and protect it from further decay. The procedure to place a crown can take 2 to 3 visits. During the first visit, the tooth that is to receive the crown will be shaped, which means some of the tooth’s existing enamel will be filed away to ensure the crown will fit snugly when it is placed over the affected tooth.

The patient will be given a local anesthetic during the procedure so there is no discomfort. After the dentist has shaped the tooth, a mold will be taken and sent to a dental lab for fabrication. Before leaving, the dentist will install a temporary crown that will be replaced when the permanent one is ready. When the crown has been fabricated, it should fit precisely over the existing tooth and look just like the teeth nearest to it.

Specific materials are used to make a crown, including porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold. In modern dentistry, a porcelain-finished crown creates the most natural look and feel, and can be easily matched to the shade of the natural teeth surrounding it. The more natural the crown looks, the better it will blend with your existing teeth.

In 2 to 3 weeks, the permanent crown will be finished. The patient will receive a local anesthetic to numb the area before the crown is placed. It will be secured to the existing tooth with cement to ensure a tight fit.

When you walk out. you’ll be the proud owner of a brand new smile and have a reason to look in the mirror the next morning. Crowns are durable and should last a minimum of 10 years, with some lasting as long as 20. Care for your crown as you would your natural teeth. Brush and floss regularly and use an antiseptic mouthwash to rinse.
