Wisdom Teeth Removal in Apopka, FL

Patient care after wisdom teeth are removed

Patients at Apopka Smiles will be required to follow some post-operative care recommendations following the extraction of wisdom teeth.

The most important recommendation is to maintain a clean mouth, which will reduce the risk of infection and limit any other dental complications that a patient is likely to experience.

Immediately following the removal of any wisdom teeth, a gauze pad will be placed over the extraction site and should remain in the mouth for a period of at least 45 minutes following the procedure. Patients should not drink from a straw or rinse the mouth for several hours to prevent the blood clot that has formed over the extraction site to become dislodged and start to bleed. If the wound was closed with sutures, using a straw to drink or rinsing the mouth could also loosen the sutures and cause bleeding.

Physical activities should be limited for a minimum of 24 hours. Any other daily activities that could be considered strenuous – lifting or yard work for example – should be postponed until the next day. If a pain medication was prescribed, it should be taken as the anesthesia wears off to reduce discomfort and make sleeping more likely.
