Extraction Site Preservation

Caring for an extraction site in the mouth

When a dentist performs an extraction to remove decayed or broken teeth, what fills the empty space in the mouth?

It’s important for the patient and the dentist to discuss how the space in the mouth will be filled before the extraction is done. There are options to consider. The vacancy could be filled with an implant or a bridge. If an implant is going to be placed, a solid jaw bone is required for the implant to be effective. If a bridge is going to be used, the bridge must be molded and placed before the teeth near the extraction site have the opportunity to move.

What happens if the space is not filled? In some cases, the jaw bone can change shape as it heals, causing teeth to shift. If the teeth shift, problems with a patient’s bite can develop and affect the way the patient speaks and chews.

Wisdom teeth are the exception. In most instances, wisdom teeth can be removed and the site will heal on its own without complication, mainly because the wisdom teeth are located in the back of the mouth.

Our team at Apopka Smiles recommends a consultation between patient and dentist before an extraction is performed. Our dentist will make a recommendation and prepare a treatment plan. Following an extraction, patients must schedule follow-up appointments so the extraction site can be monitored.
